Birkenhead Market's highly anticipated move is one step closer, because an official opening date has been revealed.

Birkenhead Market will reopen in the former TJ Hughes building on February 25, 2025.

In a post on Wirral Council's website, the agreed opening date was confirmed. Fit-out works and construction are not yet underway, despite claims that construction work was supposed to start in July.

The relocation is part of Birkenhead's larger regeneration, and traders will move in before the current market is gone.

Plans were approved in November 2025 to relocate traders into refurbished units on the site before moving into the new market.

The February opening date reflects the need to carry out additional work identified during preconstruction works, including previously undiscovered water damage in the building. It also aims to avoid disrupting traders during the busy Christmas period.

The full construction contract and details are expected to be agreed upon soon.

The council has secured full planning permission for the project.

Paula Basnett, leader of Wirral Council, said in a statement: "We know how important this move is for our traders, and our priority is to give them certainty about the next steps and make sure the new market is ready to welcome them."

She added: "While the issues that have come to light were not anticipated, identifying them now means they can be properly addressed before traders move into the building. We want to get this right and deliver a high-quality market that traders and customers can have confidence in from day one."

Councillor Basnett said measures were being put in place to support trade during the transition, including seasonal events, marketing and promotional activity, and improvements to the existing market environment.

"This remains a major investment in the future of Birkenhead Market and the wider town centre," she concluded.

Further updates will be shared with traders and the public as the project progresses.
