A Birkenhead-based addiction recovery service was rated outstanding by health inspectors after an inspection in January, as reported by Birkenhead News.
Phoenix Futures Wirral Residential Service, a residential substance misuse service providing up to 35 places for people recovering from drug or alcohol problems, was upgraded from good to outstanding following a Care Quality Commission inspection in January. The inspection is routine as part of CQC services.
The service is run by Phoenix Futures, a charity set in a therapeutic community setting. It was also rated outstanding for how caring and well-led it is.
Inspectors found an "exceptionally strong, person-centred culture" at the service, with people consistently describing staff as caring, approachable and understanding.
The service provides both group and one-to-one talking therapies alongside activities delivered on site and in the community to help people develop everyday life skills. Staff work with other agencies before someone joins to determine suitability and complete a full "whole person" assessment, including arranging onward accommodation for when people leave.
If someone decides to leave the programme early, staff use a housing pathway or refer to other housing providers to help reduce the risks of relapse or homelessness.
The service also offers a specialist prison fast-track programme, noted inspectors, and supports people to move from prison directly to residential treatment once they're released. Inspectors noted this provides extremely necessary support at a critical life transition.
Jayne Reid, CQC deputy director of mental health in the north, said staff were "calm and empathetic" while understanding people's needs and boundaries, encouraging daily routines and social interactions to develop emotional growth.
"Overall, staff and leaders should be incredibly proud of the work they are doing to ensure positive outcomes in people's lives," she said. "The feedback we received was consistently positive and is a testament to this dedication."
