Wirral has emerged as the top-performing council area in the Liverpool City Region for GCSE results, with 21% of students achieving grade 7 or higher – the equivalent of traditional A and A* grades, as reported by Birkenhead News.
The borough outperformed neighbouring areas. Liverpool recorded 17 percent, Sefton 16.5 percent and St Helens had 14 percent. Knowsley was the worst-performing area, Knowsley was the worst-performing council area in the entire country, with only 8% of results reaching grade 7 or above, according to exam data.
Halton, also in the city region, was the fourth worst-performing area nationally with 11 percent.
The figures highlight a persistent north-south divide in education outcomes. Across the North West, just 19 percent of students secured marks of 7 or higher; in London, 28.5 percent of students achieved a grade 7 or above.
The North East had the worst GCSE results of any English region, with just 17.7% of grades at 7 or higher.
When measuring grade 4 – a pass or the equivalent to a C grade – or higher, the picture was slightly results were better. The region recorded 64%, the second-highest in England after the North East.
Nationally, 67.3% of students achieved grade 4 or above, down 0.1% on last year and matching 2019 levels. Northern Ireland outperformed all English regions, with 83% of learners securing grade 4 or higher. Data is available from the Joint Council for Qualifications.
