Dozens of new homes in Bromborough could be brought into council ownership to help meet increasing demand for affordable housing.
A report to Wirral Council's Policy and Resources Committee recommends the acquisition of 38 newly built houses at the Northstone development for social rent.
If approved at the committee meeting on October 21, the Wirral view says the first homes could be occupied before the ned of the year, with others becoming occupied by spring 2027.
The proposal follows an agreement between the council and Wirral-based social landlord Magenta Living, which was originally contracted to acquire the 38 homes with assistance from a £4.2 million Homes England grant. Magenta previously paid a deposit on 50 homes at the development after securing funding from Santander.
Homes England has confirmed its support for the grant to be transferred to Wirral Council. Magenta Living has said it could release the homes to the council, if the price is negotiated. Instead of those homes, Magenta could wait and inquire for another 38 homes in phase two of the development.
Some properties may be used for those who are homeless and want to have a tenancy, but others will be through choice-based letting.
The council's housing team and Magenta Living, Wirral's largest registered housing provider, have worked closely on the proposal through the council's new Strategic Housing Partnership, established this year to improve on delivering affordable and sustainable housing across the Liverpool City Region.
If an agreement is reached, the council could develop a bigger programme of council-owned social housing.
