New road safety cameras at the Kingsway Tunnel have gone live in order to target dangerous driving behaviours.

The technology at the Wallasey Tunnel has been introduced to identify drivers using mobile phones while driving and those not wearing seatbelts, both offences that put lives at risk.

Mersey Tunnels is urging drivers to put their phone away before driving, ensure everyone is wearing their seatbelt, and keep their attention on the road.

Merseyside Road Safety Partnership announced the implementation of the cameras in the Wallasey Tunnel earlier this month.

The MRSP has worked with partner organisations to bring the cameras into operation.

In a social media post at the time, they said: "Every day, thousands of us use the Mersey Tunnels to get to work, see family, and enjoy our region. We want to make sure every one of those journeys is as safe as possible.

"That's why we're working with partners to introduce Road Safety cameras in the Kingsway Tunnel to help spot risky driving and keep everyone safe on the road."

The initiative has been named Tunnel Vision and aims to prevent collisions and protect lives rather than simply catch offenders.

The MRSP has said Tunnel Vision uses "innovative technology" to tackle the harmful road behaviours. The technology works through a four step process:

  1. The cameras identify potential concern.

  2. Trained staff complete quality checks.

  3. Police review evidence if offences are committed.

  4. Appropriate action is considered based on the evidence.

However, the outcomes are not determined solely by Tunnel Vision. The offences are flagged and independently reviewed to decide the best course of action.

Listed in the behaviours that Tunnel Vision can identify are: mobile phone use, seatbelt offences e.g not wearing one, distracted drivers, speeding, and bad driving, such as not being in control of the car, or not driving appropriately.
