Road safety cameras are set to be introduced in the Kingsway Tunnel for the first time as part of plans aimed at improving safety for thousands of motorists using the Wallasey crossing.

As reported by the Wirral Globe, The Merseyside Road Safety Partnership announced it is working with partner organisations to bring the cameras into the tunnel, which links Wallasey with Liverpool beneath the River Mersey.

As for when you can expect the cameras? No details have been revealed for when, or about what the cameras will detect.

The announcement is shortly after a 24-year-old man died in a single-vehicle e-bike crash back in August in the Queensway Tunnel, which links Liverpool and Birkenhead.

In a social media post, the partnership said: "Every day, thousands of us use the Mersey Tunnels to get to work, see family, and enjoy our region. We want to make sure every one of those journeys is as safe as possible.

"That's why we're working with partners to introduce Road Safety Cameras in the Kingsway Tunnel to help spot risky driving and keep everyone safe on the road. Keep your eyes on the road – we'll be sharing more details very soon."

The tunnel has been a staple since it opened in 1971, intended to reduce traffic in the older Queensway Tunnel.

While incidents and breakdowns in the Mersey Tunnels are not uncommon, there has previously been no dedicated road safety camera enforcement system operating inside the Kingsway Tunnel. Safety has traditionally been monitored through tunnel staff, Mersey Tunnels Police, CCTV systems and traffic management measures.

Further details about the camera scheme will be announced in the coming weeks.
