A teenager who was stabbed and slashed inside Birkenhead Park told the stranger who carried him to safety, "I love you, bro", according to the Liverpool Echo.

The 19-year-old was stabbed in Birkenhead Park last weekend and suffered a wound to his thigh and lacerations to his hand and stomach. A 15-year-old was arrested on suspicion of a Section 18, meaning wounding with intent, earlier this week.

Police were called to the scene around 1:45 am, and the teenager was promptly taken to the hospital to treat his injuries, which were not life-threatening.

Now reports from the Echo reveal that a 27-year-old man discovered the attacked teenager, who was apparently sitting on a bench when he was found. The man carried him out of the park and waited while police came.

The rescuer told the publication: "He shouted 'help me, bro'. I asked if he was okay but was hesitant to go over as it was pitch black. As he lifted his hand, I could see he had been attacked. His injury was gruesome."

The victim was already in communication with emergency services when the man arrived.

The rescuer said the man was sat close to the nearest exit. The rescuer told him not to stay there as the ambulance wouldn't get to him. He said he then took the phone away from the victim and used his non-injured hand to assist him to the exit. The victim was apparently "struggling to breathe," and his rescuer helped him push through and assisted with first aid once he was safely on the ground.

The man used his belt as a tourniquet to slow the bleeding from the teenager's hand and kept a tight hold around his wrist, but at the time he didn't realise the victim had been stabbed multiple times.

He stayed with the injured teenager until police arrived and showed officers the location where he found the victim. The rescuer said: "It was all a panic, but I remember him asking my name and him saying 'I love you, bro'."

Merseyside Police locked down a significant part of Birkenhead Park in response to the incident, with the focus around the Birkenhead Park Cricket Club pitches. An 18th birthday party was reportedly held inside the club's pavilion on Saturday night, though police have not confirmed if the incident is connected.

Detective Inspector Phil Ryan said: "Our investigation into this incident is gathering pace and a suspect is currently in custody. I hope this reassures our community how seriously we take reports of this nature. Violence on our streets and in our local parks will never be tolerated."

Anyone with information on the attack is asked to contact Merseyside Police immediately.
