Strike action is underway at the Queen Elizabeth II Dock in Eastham, where GAC dock workers are locked in a dispute over pay and on-call arrangements, as reported by Counterfire.
Workers, who are represented by the Unite union, have rejected a pay rise offer of two percent, which the union says amounts to a real-terms pay cut. Unite insists the company can afford a fairer deal and has warned that shipping could face disruption.
Two days of strike action have already taken place, with two more scheduled for today and Wednesday 16 September. Picket lines will be in place at the Dockside, QEII Dock, Canal Road, Eastham, from 7 am to 12 pm on both days.
Unite is calling for supporters to join workers on the picket lines.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said in a statement: "This is an appalling low offer from GAC, and our members won't stand for another year of below-inflation pay offers that will make them worse off. They have the full backing of Unite in this dispute against a company that can easily afford to pay them properly for the incredibly valuable work they perform."
