A start date will soon be agreed for a huge Birkenhead housing development, according to Birkenhead News.
The start date for The Borough Yard housing scheme is set to be agreed later this year. The scheme covers the area between Birkenhead Central and Green Lane Merseyrail stations and will create around 1,600 new homes.
The 32-hectare development, formerly known as the Hind Street Urban Village, is expected to dramatically change Birkenhead. Outline planning permission was granted in early 2025 and the plans include the demolition of two flyovers.
The project is being brought forward by Ion Property Group, which has since been acquired by VINCI.
On November 18, a report will be given to Wirral Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, which will seek approval to enter into a contract to begin enabling works at the site.
Steve Parry, from Ion Developments, previously said the development would provide a mix of accommodation aimed at different age groups.
He said: “It will be a complete mix of people. I live in Birkenhead, so I know a bit about the place. What happens is lots of people, young people, leave the town because the nature of accommodation that they’re looking for is not available.
“People move to Liverpool city centre into apartments or housing there. It’s actually across the board to capture the younger people on the Wirral but also provide for older people. We are already in discussions with potential operators for elderly living and care accommodation.”
The development is also important to Birkenhead's wider regeneration plans. It also includes the £15m Dock Branch Park.
The £15m Dock Branch Park will link Birkenhead’s docks with Green Lane station, following the route of a disused railway line.
The linear park has been inspired by Manhattan’s High Line, with the first section set to be delivered as part of the Borough Yard development.
Wirral Council recently confirmed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the initial section of the park will be included within the Borough Yard scheme.
