Attention, those who work, live or frequently visit Oxton Village: the town needs your help! Those in these groups are being encouraged to share their views on the area as part of a project to protect and enhance it.
As reported by Birkenhead News, work is underway on behalf of Wirral Council and The Oxton Society to create a brand new Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for Oxton Village Conservation Area. The plan aims to identify the area's strengths and where there are opportunities for enhancement, as well as how the area will be managed in the future.
Oxton Village Conservation Area has a distinct identity, shaped by its origins as an early agricultural settlement before it turned into a wealthy Victorian suburb. It has retained its rich reputation, with a selection of fancy cafes and upmarket restaurants to choose from. The area contains a rich collection of listed buildings and buildings of local significance and remains a vibrant community at the heart of East Wirral.
The conservation area was first granted in 1979, but gradual changes to buildings, streets and public spaces have affected its character since then.
Community involvement is a must in the development of the new plan. The project team wants to bring people together to see what is most important and valued to the people in and around Oxton, as well as the challenges facing the area and methods for improvement.
As well as improvement, the online survey wants people to share what they think makes Oxton special, and how the conservation area can expand, without damaging the area's historic character or roots.
It is important to note the survey can be filled out anonymously if participants wish.
Councillor Mark Skillicorn, Chair of Wirral Council's Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, said: "Oxton Village is one of Wirral's most treasured historic places, with a unique character shaped by generations of residents, businesses and community groups."
He added: "Conservation is not simply about protecting historic buildings. It is about understanding what makes a place special, strengthening local identity and ensuring our heritage continues to contribute to the wellbeing of current and future generations. I would encourage everyone with a connection to Oxton, whether you live, work or spend time there, to complete the survey and help shape the future of this remarkable conservation area."
The survey will remain open until August 31 and can be completed at Oxton Village CAAMP on the council website.
