Tranmere Rovers have confirmed the appointment of a former Premier League midfielder as the club's new assistant manager.
Dean Whitehead joins new manager Darrell Clarke for the third time. The two previously worked together at Port Vale and Barnsley.
Whitehead had a steady 19-year football career, joining Sunderland, Huddersfield Town, and Stoke City, according to the Wirral Globe. He retired in 2018 and pivoted to behind-the-scenes as many footballers do, to become a coach.
Since retiring eight years ago, he's worked for several teams, including Cardiff City and Watford.
The club confirmed his new position this week, looking optimistic towards a new season, following the difficult past football season. Tranmere will face Rochdale AFC at Prenton Park on August 1 in the preliminary Carabao Cup round.
Whitehead said in a statement: "I’m delighted to get it over the line now and start to get working and building on what was a difficult season last year."
He continued, "I know how Darrell works, and I know what he demands from his players, from his staff, from the people around the club. I’ve come here to have success at this football club."
Clarke welcomed the appointment, describing Whitehead as a coach who commands immediate respect due to his playing background and coaching experience. He said Whitehead would bring leadership, knowledge, and a clear understanding of the culture the club is aiming to build.
The Tranmere boss also thanked the club’s board for supporting the appointment.
Whitehead’s arrival adds further experience to Clarke’s coaching staff as the club prepares for the new campaign.
