Tranmere Rovers have appointed Dean Whitehead as their new assistant manager, and he has given his first interview in the role.

The former Premier League midfielder, who made over 300 top-flight appearances for clubs including Sunderland and Stoke City, recently joined Darrell Clarke's backroom team at Prenton Park. He previously worked with Clarke at Port Vale and Barnsley football clubs.

Speaking after his appointment, Whitehead said he was eager to get started following a difficult 2023-24 campaign for the club.

The new assistant manager said in a statement: "I'm delighted to get it over the line now and start to get working and building on what was a difficult season last year".

"I know how Darrell works, and I know what he demands from his players, from his staff, from the people around the Club. I've come here to have success at this football club."

Rovers narrowly avoided relegation from League Two last season and will be looking to improve significantly in the upcoming campaign.

Now the club has released his full interview.
