A Birkenhead MP spent the weekend visiting two community hubs in Birkenhead while meeting volunteers and staff and learning about the work they do, according to Birkenhead News.
Labour MP Alison McGovern visited Argyle Community Centre at its Argyle Street premises to tour the facilities and meet members of the team. The visit formed part of her ongoing work engaging with organisations and businesses across the constituency.
Alison said: "Argyle Community Centre is somewhere people can go to look after their health, build confidence and be part of a community. We should be doing everything we can to back businesses like this."
She added: "It was great to meet the team and see the work they do. I'll be looking at how I can help them secure the funding and get even more young people engaged."
On Saturday, the MP for Birkenhead joined volunteers and visitors at Wirral Repair Café as the group marked its third anniversary at Birkenhead Central Library. The group was started by the Wirral Deen Centre in 2023 and repairs everything. They have a success rate of 79 percent!
However, it's not just the cafe working alone, as they're part of a larger network of repair cafes that aims to repair household items, reduce waste and help residents save money. Volunteers also run a pop-up café serving drinks and cakes, with the library providing a welcoming community space.
Speaking during the anniversary event, Alison said: "Wirral Repair Café is a brilliant example of a community looking after itself and the environment. Every item its volunteers fix is one less thing in landfill and money back in someone's pocket."
Wirral Repair Café normally meets at Birkenhead Central Library on the first Saturday of every month between 2 pm and 4 pm. You can visit if you have items in need of repair without booking.
