Whether you're after a perfectly pulled espresso, a leisurely brunch or simply a cosy spot to escape the rain, the best coffee shops Birkenhead and its neighbouring Oxton Village have to offer will not disappoint. This corner of the Wirral has quietly developed a thriving independent café scene, from historic roasteries to community-focused spaces. Here are seven venues well worth seeking out.

1. Blooming Skull Coffee

Located on Argyle Street in the heart of Birkenhead, Blooming Skull Coffee is a favourite of Birkenhead's coffee scene. The shop has a range of coffee on offer, with speciality espresso being their signature, as well as homemade baked goods.

The shop also specialises in homemade baked goods. They are open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. The Birkenhead store is their second location, which opened in 2019

2. Liberty Bell Coffee

Opposite Hamilton Square Station is Liberty Bell Coffee, a late-opening coffee shop that is known for its aesthetics and large portions. The shop also has a range of delicious sandwiches, including an unbelievable steak sandwich. Locals say it is very reasonable and is also vegan-friendly, with a range of vegan treats on offer.

3. Twenty Sixteen Coffee & Kitchen

This family-run café at 1a Village Road in Oxton Village opened in October 2022 and has quickly become a local favourite. This cafe is named after the year the owner's daughter was born.

The cafe won a Blue Ribbon at the 2025/26 Good Food Awards for its food quality, service and value. The all-day menu spans breakfasts, brunches and lunches, with everything made fresh in-house. Homemade cakes come from local bakers, and there's a dedicated children's menu plus toys and activity packs. Both dogs and families are warmly welcomed.

4. Loaf

Another staple in Oxton is the once viral Loaf, which opened at the beginning of this year. Loaf is independently-owned, and its focus is on artisan sandwiches from its deli and, of course, coffee. Loaf may be new, but it has quickly fit into Oxton's many independent shops and cafes. It is open 7:30 am-3:30 pm every day, other than Sunday, when it opens at 8 am. Food by locals is described as "fresh", and the drinks as "lovely".

5. Home

A stalwart of Oxton Village since 2006, Home occupies a converted former bakery on Christchurch Road, featuring a glass atrium, an intimate sandstone cellar and a summer courtyard. The café sources ingredients from local Wirral suppliers, with everything prepared and cooked from scratch to order. In colder months, a lit open fire adds to the cosy atmosphere. It's particularly popular for weekend brunch and can get busy, so arriving early is advisable.

6. Amélie Coffee & Cakes

A well-known staple in Birkenhead, the independent family-owned café at 30 Hamilton Street sits just off Hamilton Square, making it a handy stop before or after exploring Birkenhead's historic quarter or visiting The Wilfred Owen Story nearby. Open Monday to Friday, 8.30 am–3 pm, Amélie offers freshly made sandwiches, perfectly cooked poached eggs and well-crafted coffee in relaxed, welcoming surroundings. It's praised for the Parisian-style atmosphere and lots of iced tea.

7. Caffe Cream at Birkenhead Park

Inside Birkenhead Park's Visitor Centre, Caffe Cream is a great pit stop after a stroll through the historic park.

Set within the Visitor Centre of the world's first publicly funded park, Caffe Cream is an ideal pit stop inside the green space. The award-winning group, which began in 2012 in New Brighton, specialises in small-batch ice cream alongside grilled cheese toasties and Lavazza coffee. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the landscaped flower beds, and it's popular with families thanks to the nearby play area. The café is open daily from 9 am and closes at 4 pm.
