Looks like plans for the new Birkenhead Market have moved forward, as a new contractor was chosen to prepare the area for construction.
Wirral Council has approved a Pre-Construction Services Agreement (PCSA) with Krol Corlett Ltd, which will oversee design development and enabling works for the new market in the former TJ Hughes building in Birkenhead town centre.
The agreement is an expensive one - worth £610,843, according to the Wirral View. If you're wondering what the dosh is being used for, it covers pre-design work, enabling works, and the ordering of materials needed in the early stages of the project to avoid delays.
The PCSA appointment follows a proccess where contractors were encouraged to submit proposals for the refurbishment of the former building.
The move is part of big plans to regenerate Birkenhead and was approved by the council late last year. Under their plans, traders will be relocated to refurbished units in the town centre before the current market site is destroyed and changed into an outdoor market, event space, and public area.
However, discussions with traders are ongoing as plans for the new market arise. The overall goal is to create a welcoming destination attracting new shoppers and increasing town center business.
Wirral Council leader Paula Basnett said in a statement: "The new market will play an important role in the future of Birkenhead town centre, so we want to see a destination which builds on the very best of what we have already and creates an attractive and welcoming place to visit and shop in."
Once the design stage is complete, a main contract for the refurbishment and fit-out works will be agreed, subject to costs and scheduling.
