A £20 million port and distribution facility has officially opened at Birkenhead Docks.
As reported by the Wirral Globe, panel supplier Finsa has opened the 156,000 sq ft hub at Grandidges Quay, within the Wirral Waters development. The hub was constructed by Glencar, who secured the building contract in February 2025. At the time, Glencar's Operations Director, Tom Kearsley said the development was a chance to "contribute to the transformative Wirral Waters regeneration scheme".
The facility includes a logistics warehouse, cross-laminated timber office building, commercial showroom and dedicated dockside crane.
The development was created in collaboration with Peel Ports. It's within the up-and-coming Wirral Waters development, but specifically within the Wirral Waters Freeport tax site. The hub is purely for business, intended to support Finsa's UK operations and expansion plans.
Finsa, a subsidiary of Spanish company Financiera Maderera S.A., has operated in the UK since 1978 and has been based in Merseyside since 1990. The company has an annual turnover of around £60 million and supplies distributors and manufacturers across the construction and interior design sectors.
The opening ceremony was attended byLiverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, Alejandro Polanco Mata, consul general of Spain in Manchester, and Wirral Council leader Councillor Paula Basnett.
Representatives from Finsa were also there, as well as people from Peel Ports and other important guests.
Councillor Basnett said: "This £20 million investment is a major vote of confidence in Wirral, safeguarding existing jobs, creating opportunities for future growth, and strengthening the important role that Birkenhead Docks plays in our local economy."
She added: "This development demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses, local government, and regional partners work together to unlock investment and support economic growth."
Finsa said in a statement: "This opening marks a decisive milestone for the Finsa Group. Our £20 million investment in Birkenhead reaffirms our long-term commitment to the British market. It demonstrates how responsible private investment contributes to port land regeneration, creates quality jobs, and promotes sustainable development alongside our partners and the local community."
Councillor Basnett said the new facility "not only strengthens Finsa's operations but also builds on the momentum we're seeing across our waterfront, helping to attract further investment and support sustainable growth for years to come."
