Hundreds of protestors gathered outside Number 10 North in Manchester on Friday to oppose the Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline proposals, including many protestors from the Wirral.

As reported by Macclesfield Nub News, the protest was organised on 16 October by East Cheshire AACCS (Action Against Carbon Capture and Storage).

The protest was stationed at Albert Square in Manchester, bringing together those affected by the plans.

The £5 billion Peak Cluster project has become a major point of contention in the Wirral and other areas along its proposed route. The scheme aims to capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions produced at four cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire, before transporting the gas through a new underground pipeline across Cheshire and the Wirral. It would then be transferred offshore for permanent storage beneath the seabed in the East Irish Sea.

The project is intended to reduce industrial carbon emissions, but it has prompted concerns among some residents and councillors about public safety, environmental impacts, construction disruption and the effects on local communities.

The pipeline in the Wirral covers parts of Hoylake and Meols, with the route recently amended by Peak Cluster, with a consultation due in January.

Prestbury parish councillor Stephen Gildert, who attended the protest said that "protestors in the hundreds" gathered, including those from the Wirral to publicly oppose the Peak Cluster pipeline.

The protest followed days after Cheshire East Council voted against the pipeline. Wirral Council has offered a similar sentiment, voting to unanimously oppose Peak Cluster accessing council-owned land for route surveys back in September.

No confirmation has been made yet whether the project will go ahead.
