A man who died alongside his dog in a Wallasey housefire on 19 October on Beaufort Drive has been named.

The man has been named as Mark Fawke, a former football coach and committee member at Wallasey Village Youth Football Club as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

Tributes have been paid to the coach by the club and others on social media.

Mr Fawke, who the club called Fawksey, was described in their social media post as "inspiration to countless children" and much more than a coach.

The club said Mr Fawke was more than a coach, and that he gave children encouragement and memories they will carry for a lifetime.

Their statement continued, "Wallasey Village YFC was incredibly lucky to have you as a coach and former committee member. We will always be grateful for your dedication, the players you helped develop and the lasting difference you made to so many young lives."

They thanked him for his work with the children, adding that he will be "sadly missed" by Wallasey YFC and the children he coached.

Another football club, Port Sunlight Village FC, also paid tribute to Mr Fawke, as he played for them.

They described him as a "cracking lad".

The fire that sadly took Mr Fawke's life started on Monday night as emergency services were called to his home on Beaufort Drive.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) said crews arrived four minutes after receiving the 999 call and found the ground floor of the semi-detached property on fire, with smoke coming from the upper floor.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property to search for occupants and tackle the blaze. Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service also attended.

Mr Fawke was rescued alongside his pup from the house. The fire was extinguished at around 9:06 pm, but unfortunately, both he and his dog were pronounced dead at the scene. His dog died despite attempts to resuscitate it.

A cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined, but an investigation by Merseyside Police and the MFRS is currently underway.
