Wirral Poetry Festival will return to Port Sunlight on 3 and 4 October, where poets, performers, and poetry enthusiasts will come together in the model village for two days of readings, workshops and performances.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the festival will take place across a few venues in Port Sunlight, between 10:30 am and 7:30 pm. A lot of the events are free.
Ticketed events include actor Leigh Lawson sharing stories and poems from his collection Now and Then at Port Sunlight Church Hall on Saturday 3 October at 5:30 pm. Tickets are £6.
Poets Cathy Galvin and Jennifer Lee Tsai will read from their debut Bloodaxe Books collections – Ethnology: A Love Song for Connemara and Melete respectively – at the same venue on 4 October at 7:30 pm.
The Slam Night will occur on 3 October at 7:30 pm at Port Sunlight Church Hall, and a prize of £100 will be up for grabs. Tickets are £6, and those wishing to compete can apply via the Wirral Poetry Festival website.
To celebrate younger voices, the festival will commemorate the winners of its first Youth Poetry Competition for young people aged 11 to 18 in the Liverpool City Region. Supported by the Christopher Salmon Foundation and held in memory of young Wirral poet Christopher Salmon, the competition invited entries on the theme of 'Home'.
Amjad Sharif, 11, a pupil at Oldershaw School in Wallasey, won the competition. Kai Lloyd Jones, 12, and Adriana Brandao, 17, were named runners-up.
Other ticketed events include a Performing Poetry Workshop, An Audience With Zoe Brooks, Caroline Smith and Barry Woods, and An Audience With Sarah James.
Wirral Poetry Festival's Alison Schultz said in a statement: "Living in such a digital age, there's never been a more important time to celebrate poetry and literacy, and there's no better setting than Port Sunlight.
