Councillors have endorsed plans for Wirral Council's method of reducing carbon emissions, responding to the climate emergency and protecting the local environment.

According to reports by Birkenhead News, Members of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee received updates on progress made over the last year. This was alongside reports explaining priority actions that will shape the council's environmental work over the next year.

Noted in the report is the positive progress across the council's efforts, including work improving the energy efficiency of council buildings, supporting nature recovery, biodiversity projects, and securing outside funding for large-scale carbon reduction projects.

The children of the Wirral are leading this charge, as at St Mary's Catholic College in Wallasey, the school just completed an energy efficiency scheme and installations that could save the school up to £50,000 a year.

But for the coming year, the focus is to reduce emissions from council buildings. For the Wirral, these are one of the largest sources of carbon emissions within council operations. This is also alongside work to improve climate resilience and protect the natural environment of the Wirral.

The report notes the efforts that weren't quite reached, like this year's carbon reduction targets. But they also outline plans to speed up the progress in areas where making emissions savings is feasible.

With many of the initial measures that helped reduce emissions now completed, the council’s future climate work will focus on delivering more ambitious and complex projects. This will include efforts to move away from fossil fuels, particularly in areas such as heating and transport.

Members welcomed the progress achieved over the past year and backed the key priorities set out for the year ahead. The committee reaffirmed the council’s ongoing commitment to addressing climate change and safeguarding Wirral’s natural environment for the future.
