A teacher at Birkenhead Sixth Form College completed a huge 1,000-mile fundraising challenge to support Maggie's Wirral. In the proccess, he raised £3,281 for the cancer support charity, as reported by Birkenhead News.

Alan is Head of Art at the college. For the challenge, he ran 10 miles every day for 100 days in a row. If you're wondering, Alan chose this specific number because it represented 1,000 people who are diagnosed with cancer each day in England.

On his last day, emotions ran high as it was the last day of term, and he finished by running back to the college. Colleagues were there waiting to cheer him on.

Staff also joined Alan on his journey at times, running and walking with him. Learning Support Assistant Joe and Tutor Jack completed 10 miles with Alan every week. Head of Environmental Science Mike, sports teacher Pat, Head of Sport Nick, Head of Graphics Liam, Head of Politics Jane, and Head of History David joined him where they could.

On the challenge, Alan said it felt "surreal and deeply rewarding". He added: "When you're in the middle of a challenge like this, you focus so much on the daily routine – getting up, putting the miles in, recovering, and repeating – that you almost forget how big the overall goal really is."

He also said the experience taught him how powerful consistency is through "small, repeated actions". Speaking of his commitment, he also said doing it, rain or shine, shows how much a person can achieve when they keep going.

The Head of Art also praised his colleagues for their "energy, encouragement and a real sense of camaraderie".

On his charity, he said Maggie's provides "vital support" to those with cancer and their families across the community.

Speaking on the funds raised, he said: "Raising more than £3,200, including Gift Aid, means a huge amount. It reflects generosity, solidarity and the willingness of people to get behind a cause that truly matters."
