Check your emails, because you could be getting some important ones. Yes, the council is beginning their annaul voter canvassing ahead of the election in May 2027. Up to 100,000 people could be contacted across the Wirral.
As referenced by the Birkenhead News, Wirral Council will undergo an 'all-out' election, meaning every seat in every ward will be up for grabs. Each councillor elected will serve a four-year term, with the next election scheduled in 2031.
Labour is currently the largest party in the council, with council leader Paula Basnett at the helm. However, despite being the largest party, Labour does not have enough seats to hold a majority in Wallasey Town Hall, holding just over a third of the 66 seats. They currently have 27. The Green Party and Conservatives also maintain a considerable presence on the council. Both have 14 seats each.
The canvass aims to ensure the electoral register is up-to-date and completed. Residents must provide information by law if they are contacted, so they must say if there are changes to their address or not. The deadline to respond to the annual canvass email is midnight on 2 August.
Paper forms will be delivered to the address if the council doesn't have a listed email address for a household, or if their email goes unanswered.
Matthew Bennett, Electoral Registration Officer for Wirral Council, said: "Completing your annual canvass return is quick and easy to do and allows us to keep the electoral register up to date, and ensures you can vote in upcoming elections.
He added that completing it means the canvass can be done "as quickly and smoothly as possible" and means residents won't be pestered again for a year about it.
If that's not enough of an incentive, being on the electoral register gives you an improved credit score, as it validates that you have a fixed or updated address.
