A new board of prominent community leaders has been announced to support expert cancer care charity Maggie's across Merseyside, just weeks after an official groundbreaking ceremony for the charity's new centre currently under construction in Liverpool.
The new Maggie's Liverpool centre has been made possible thanks to five million from the Steve Morgan Foundation, which has completely commissioned, designed and funded the building. It is expected to support thousands of people with cancer from across Merseyside each year, as well as their family and friends.
The board comprises distinguished business and civic leaders who have joined forces to help raise awareness of Maggie's expert support and fundraise towards the ongoing costs of providing free practical, emotional and psychological care at Maggie's Liverpool and Maggie's Wirral in the future.
Maggie's Wirral chair Jim Davies, founder of DWF Law Firm and former High Sheriff of Merseyside, will continue to play a key role as the charity expands across the region. He has chaired Maggie's Wirral since it opened in 2021 and will join the board overseeing both the Wirral and new Liverpool centres, alongside long-standing Maggie's Wirral board member and philanthropy consultant Jayne Hauxwell DL. Current board member Dickon White, Regional Director of the Jockey Club, will also remain involved.
The board will also include Edward Stanley, the 19th Earl of Derby, who will serve as Honorary Patron for Maggie's Liverpool and Wirral.
Lord Derby said he was excited for Maggie's to "expand its impact across Merseyside", and that the new centre will help reach more people across Merseyside, particularly "where access to support has traditionally been more difficult".
Maggie's Wirral, based at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, opened in September 2021 with funding from the Steve Morgan Foundation. During 2025, it welcomed more than 22,000 visits from people affected by cancer, as reported by Birkenhead News. Maggie's runs support groups for those affected by the illness as well as providing practical help for finances and other worries.
The new Liverpool centre is due to open next year near the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre. The Liverpool site is Maggie's second centre in Merseyside.
The new centre is being built at the junction of Daulby Street and Prescot Street, close to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. It was the first project approved for development on the site of the former Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
