A Moreton man has been jailed for nine years after stabbing a wheelchair user in Woodchurch in what a judge described as "utterly mindless, drunken violence".
Glyn Holland, 41, of Meadfoot Road, attacked his 62-year-old victim near the Co-op on Hoole Road at around 3:30pm on June 25. The victim, who uses an electric wheelchair following a previous stroke, did not know his attacker, as reported by the Wirral Globe.
Holland was called "extremely drunk" when he approached the man and stabbed him repeatedly with a large kitchen knife unprovoked. The victim was left in critical care with three stab wounds and internal bleeding after the blade ruptured his spleen, narrowly missing his heart and lungs.
Holland was arrested Glebelands Road in Moreton later that afternoon. He was covered in his victim's blood.
Liverpool Crown Court heard Holland has 52 previous convictions for 68 offences, including possession of a bladed article in 2018. He told the court he had no memory of the attack due to his level of intoxication.
Defending, Brenda Carville said Holland was ruined by his alcohol dependency.
Sentencing Holland this morning, Judge Simon Medland KC said: "In broad daylight, and completely unprovoked, you repeatedly stabbed at and into an elderly, highly vulnerable man who was a wheelchair user because of a previous serious stroke."
The judge called the victim's survival "miraculous". He added that Holland poses "a significant risk of harm to the public". He would've initially served 12 years, but Holland received credit for his early guilty plea after admitting section 18 wounding and possession of a bladed article.
He was sentenced to nine years for the attack and 1 year for the knife offence, to run concurrently.
