Police found a teenage suspect hiding in a bush after a police dog helped track him down following a burglary and car theft in Bebington.
As reported by Birkenhead News, at 7 am on 8 September, a resident of Parkside Road discovered she had been burgled overnight. The offenders had carried out an untidy search of her kitchen cupboards and stolen her white Citroen DS from the driveway.
House-to-house and CCTV enquiries took place during an investigation, but it wasn't that which found the suspect.
On 13 September, at around 11:05 pm, two males were witnessed changing the number plate of a white Citroen near Christleton Close in Prenton. Officers were deployed, but both males ran off on seeing police.
Officers searched the area, with police dog Ziggy on hand to help. One of the suspects was located hiding in a bush and detained, thanks to Ziggy's killer nose.
A 17-year-old male from Upton was arrested on suspicion of burglary, theft of motor vehicle, and handling stolen goods. He was taken into custody to be interviewed. Efforts to identify and locate the second suspect are ongoing.
Burglary reports in Merseyside are at their lowest since 2018, when the force established its dedicated Burglary Investigation Team. Since then, burglary rates have fallen by 64%. In the past year, from April 2025 to March 2026, there was an 11% reduction compared to the previous 12 months.
Detective Inspector Kevin O'Rourke said: "Residents of Merseyside have every right to feel safe in their own homes, and burglary can leave victims feeling fearful in the very place they should feel secure.
"That is why we have a team dedicated to tackling it, and we take all reports extremely seriously. Our investigation into this incident is progressing well with one arrest made, and we will continue our efforts to find the second suspect.
"Information from the public is a vital part of our efforts to disrupt burglars and ensure they are put before the courts to prevent other homeowners becoming victims."
