Wirral's parks and green spaces have been recognised as some of the best in the North West. Our green spaces have achieved 37 Green Flag Awards in 2026, more than any other local authority in the region.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the awards are the international quality mark for parks and green spaces across the UK, recognising places that are welcoming, well-kept, and safe. This year's success comes as the Green Flag Award scheme reaches its 30th year, with Wirral's parks among a record-breaking 2,391 sites across the UK to receive the award.
Four sites also achieved Green Heritage Site Accreditation in recognition of the way their historic features are cared for and promoted – Birkenhead Park, Hilbre Island Nature Reserve, Landican Cemetery and Wirral Country Park.
New Ferry Butterfly Park, managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust, and Holy Cross church in Woodchurch received Green Flag Community Awards.
But the awards aren't just for the greenery; they recognise the hard work of those who keep Wirral's parks and green spaces alive year-round.
Councillor Max Booth, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said in a statement: "We're incredibly proud that so many of Wirral's parks and green spaces have once again been recognised through the Green Flag Awards.
Mr Booth said the achievement is due to the "hard work and dedication of council staff, volunteers, community groups and partner organisations".
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award Scheme Manager at Keep Britain Tidy, said: "With public services under pressure, investing in parks is not a luxury; it's a practical, preventative solution and one of the most visible ways to improve people's quality of life."
He acknowledged how the Wirral has shown what can happen when communities support and manage parks well. He also highlighted the importance of people having access to green spaces.
