One of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world is taking place at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake this week.

The Amateur Championship features a world-class field with 288 golfers from 41 countries.

It is the 19th time the event has been staged at the Royal Liverpool, and it will see players vying to follow in the footsteps of past champions including Bobby Jones, José María Olazábal, Sergio Garcia and Matteo Manassero.

Three Hoylake members have earned their place in the main field: Matthew Dodd-Berry, Ben Bolton and Dan Hayes.

Contested over two stroke play rounds and then match play format, the winner will earn exemptions into The Open, the US Open, a DP World Tour event and, by tradition, an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament provided they retain their amateur status.

The first two days are played across both Royal Liverpool and West Lancashire, with the leading players making the cut to continue from Wednesday at Royal Liverpool and the 36-hole final played on Saturday.

The first Amateur was held at Hoylake in 1885, when 44 players from 12 clubs competed.

The Amateur Championship is free to attend and people wanting to register an interest can do so at https://r1.marketing-pages.com/p/49MT-15DU/amateur-championship-2026-ryi.
