Up to 100 new affordable homes could be built in Liscard, as Wirral Council is looking for a partner to develop a town centre site for homes.
As reported by Wirral View, the former municipal offices on Egerton Grove and an adjacent car park accessed from Seaview Road were demolished last year after being declared surplus to requirements in July 2023.
The council is now looking to appoint a Lead Development Partner to bring forward an entirely affordable housing scheme on the cleared land.
Council leader Paula Basnett did say that increasing the number of good quality affordable homes in the Wirral is a key priority. She added that bringing more people into the town centre will increase business, support local businesses and will help to regenerate Liscard.
The development aligns with The Liscard Neighbourhood Framework, an integrated masterplan approved in November 2021 that sets out a vision for a more locally distinctive and community-focused town while supporting economic growth.
The council already has £10.78m from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund Round 3 for Liscard's regeneration programme. A £1.2m contingency is available from council funding if costs rise. However, any bigger plans for Liscard are currently in development and not set in stone.
A capacity study has indicated the Seaview Road site can accommodate up to 100 new affordable homes. All units will be affordable housing.
As we all know, the demand for social and affordable housing remains significant across the Wirral.
The government has recently encouraged councils to make better use of publicly owned land to support housebuilding, an approach Wirral is already taking forward through its Affordable Housing Plan. The council's strategy combines acquisitions, partnership working and use of council-owned land as part of a wider Strategic Housing Partnership with housing associations and development partners.
Many sites for affordable housing have already been built and are in the works. In Eastham, plans were submitted in August to build 136 affordable homes at an old oil depot site, while in Bromborough, property developer Vistry has submitted plans to build 233 affordable properties among a total of 534.
