Leasowe Castle Hotel has failed to find a buyer at auction despite the asking price being slashed by £2m. The 48-room hotel, which dates back to the 16th century, received just a single bid of £1.41m in an online auction that ended on Tuesday, well below the £1.5m reserve price.
However, as reported by the Liverpool Echo, a sale may be on the horizon.
Auction House North West said three or four potential buyers have been invited to view the property on on October 16, with the aim of completing a sale under auction terms.
A spokesman for Auction House North West told the publication: "We are still trying to sell it, so we have three or four people having a look at it on Friday. We are hoping to sell it post auction under auction terms. There was someone who entered a bid, but it didn't meet the terms, so we have gone back to those who expressed an interest and will see what they are willing to bid."
The castle hotel, which is also a Grade II* listed building, is close to Leasowe Beach and Leasowe Golf Club.
When it was put on the market in early 2025, after the hotel suddenly closed in February of that year, the asking price was £3.5 million. However, the price was reduced to £2.35 million in June, and now has been cut down to £1.5 million.
The castle was built in 1593 by Ferdinando, the fifth Earl of Derby and later Mayor of Liverpool.
The hotel's closure was a shock to the system, as there were reports of guests being unaware of the closure and workers allegedly left unpaid in an investigation by the Echo. Although the exact reason for the closure is unknown, the hotel did receive a zero star hygiene rating in August 2024, with reports of a mouse infestation.
A High Court possession order was granted and the building was taken into the hands of administrators on December 11, 2025.
A statement was shared by the owners in February 2025 after the hotel closed, which was thought to be temporary at the time.
According to the Wirral Globe, their statement read: "Due to circumstances beyond the hotel company’s control, we advise that we have ceased trading and operations temporarily until further notice.
