Over 700 families attended a new festival for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) at Birkenhead Park on Saturday.
The adorably named SENsory Fest sold out quickly across three sessions that took place over the weekend. According to the Wirral Globe, the mini festival featured sensory play, therapy animals, live entertainment, inflatables, and parent support hubs.
Organisers said the event was intended to be a judgement-free space for children and young people with additional needs. The brains behind the highly-praised festival were Yay Wirral and fellow SEND parent Kate Corcoran.
Families across the North West apparently flocked to the festival, ready to enjoy what they called a stress-free day out with their children. Describing the event, one advertisement said: "Enjoy live slow-level entertainment from Mr Tumble Liverpool and Friends plus unlimited inflatables, a giant ball pit, giant foam pit, messy play tent, LEGO tent, therapy animal meet & greets, bubble shows, trampolines and character mascot cuddles and high fives — all included in your ticket."
One parent said: "It's the first SEND session we've ever been to where we could all enjoy the day without stress." Another added: "We felt relaxed and in a safe space. The children had a great time."
Communication support was praised by attendees, including visual boards for non-speaking children. Accessible facilities were provided throughout the park.
"We know how difficult it can be to find spaces where your child is fully accepted," Ms Corcoran said. "Hearing families say this was the first time they felt relaxed on a day out reinforces why events like this are needed."
She added the atmosphere had been "beautiful", with "no judgement or pressure" on children.
Due to such high demand, the organisers have already confirmed the festival will return on August 26 of this year and June 19 of next year.
Tickets are very reasonable, costing £12 for children and £7 for adults.
