Heswall Golf Club has been granted an alcohol license after members complained they couldn't drink at the club before 11 am. Specifically, they complained they couldn't toast to a hole-in-one before 11 am, according to Birkenhead News.
Wirral Council's Licensing Sub-Committee approved two key changes to the club's premises licence following a meeting with club representatives.
The most important change made with the new licence is that alcohol can be served from 11 am. The committee heard this was requested because members who made a hole-in-one early in their round were unable to have their traditional celebratory whisky shot. Whisky can now be sold at 10 am.
The second, more significant change extends the licensed area from just the clubhouse to cover the whole golf course. This means alcohol can now be served at the half-way house after the twelfth hole, where previously only soft drinks and snacks were available.
Representatives for the club told the committee that members of the club had regularly requested alcoholic drinks at the half-way house and to take drinks onto the course before the licence was in place.
The expanded licence also allows the club's drinks buggy to serve alcohol to players on the course, which is common in America with the name cart girls and cart boys. Representatives said the buggy is rarely used, typically only for large events.
The committee heard that another reason for the site-wide licence was to futureproof the club in case the clubhouse is relocated as part of any future alteration of the course.
However, there is still one area not covered by the licence. The Wirral Way walking trail passes through the golf course. That land belongs to Wirral Council, so it cannot and is not included in the club's licensing coverage.
The committee attached conditions to the approval, including a requirement that alcohol sales outside the clubhouse must end at 5 pm. Sales in the clubhouse continue until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 1 am Thursday to Saturday.
