Citizens Advice Wirral is seeking new volunteers in the form of soon-to-be and already retired residents to help other residents during difficult times.
The charity says volunteering offers more than just giving back – it provides a chance to stay mentally active, learn new skills, meet new people and become part of a supportive team.
As reported by Birkenhead News, Mike, who joined Citizens Advice Wirral after a 53-year career as an electrical engineer, was looking for something different after retirement. "I needed something different to keep my brain working," he says. Three years later, he now mentors new volunteers and enjoys the variety each day brings.
"I enjoy volunteering at Citizens Advice Wirral because every day is different," he explains. "Seeing students increase their confidence as they progress with their training is really rewarding. Try it, as it is very rewarding."
Karen's journey shows how where volunteering can take you. After retiring from education on ill health grounds, she joined as a trainee volunteer in 2014 and progressed through various advice roles to become the organisation's first volunteer Advice Team Leader. She faced extensive training in the role, but is now a confident volunteer.
Karen said volunteering has given her renewed purpose because she can learn and help others, even if she can't return to paid work.
"Knowing that you are making a genuine difference in someone's life makes every challenge worthwhile," she says.
So now Citizens Advice Wirral is reaching out to volunteers from all kinds of professional backgrounds. They emphasise no experience is required, and training is provided for all volunteers.
