A Liscard man has been jailed less than 24 hours after engaging in a chase with police through Upton on an electric motorbike.
As reported by Birkenhead News, Joel Carrol, 23, of Central Park Avenue, was sentenced to 12 months in prison at Liverpool Crown Court on 9 September after pleading guilty to dangerous driving, driving with no insurance, driving whilst disqualified, and failing to stop.
The incident began at around 3.45 pm on Tuesday, 8 September, when officers spotted two electric motorbikes on Arrowe Park Road that failed to stop when instructed by police.
Footage from Merseyside Police cars showed Carrol riding his BRZ electric dirt motorbike on pavements and on the wrong side of the road during the pursuit. He mounted a kerb and lost control of his vehicle, falling to the ground.
Officers found him on Hambledon Drive, where he was arrested. His bike was seized at the scene.
Inspector Simon Wilson said: "Carrol's crimes endangered motorists and pedestrians that day after he rode in such a dangerous manner without a licence. He also put several of our officers at risk as he rode away from our police cars."
He added that the police will not tolerate the dangerous use of illegal bikes on the road. Numerous incidents with illegal e-bikes have caused issues in the Wirral in recent months, with a woman being run over by an e-bike in Birkenhead town centre back in February. The woman, who was in her sixties, was hospitalised with her injuries.
The arrest of Mr Carrol was made under the police operation called Operation Gears, a campaign targeted towards vehicles linked with serious crimes, like robberies and antisocial behaviour. The campaign, launched in June 2025, has resulted in more than 1,600 two-wheeled vehicles being seized.
