A gun found buried on New Brighton beach has been handed to police for examination.
Officers were contacted by a member of the public at around 3:15 pm on Tuesday after the weapon, believed to be a self-loading pistol, was discovered buried in the sand.
The weapon has thankfully been forensically recovered and will be assessed to see if it's viable.
Detective Inspector Chris Clark from Merseyside Police's Firearm Investigation Team said: "Thankfully the weapon was found by an adult who did the right thing by contacting us.
"We have been able to forensically recover the gun, but because of its condition and the fact it was covered in multiple layers of sand and oil, further tests will be carried out to establish if it is a genuine firearm.
"We know that even imitation firearms can be used to cause fear or intimidation, so it is vital that we remove them from our streets.
Merseyside Police urged anyone who knows where guns are being stored or knows anyone storing them to contact them.
